The KOURA GOSSO Festival is a professional festival and market of African music born in Chad, which highlights young talents and cultural and creative industries of the continent. It is mainly held in Moundou and N’Djamena, with a dynamic that is both popular, professional and civic.
Identity and meaning
- The name ‘Koura Gosso’ comes from the Ngambay language and means ‘young talent’, which reflects the festival’s vocation to reveal and support the new generation of African artists.
- Created in 2017 by Ernestine (Nemadjilem) Netoua and the association Femme Aussi (AFEMA), it is supported by a structure committed to the development of women, young girls and youth in general.
Places, periods and editions
- The festival takes place every year over 4 to 7 days, mainly in Moundou (economic capital of Chad) and, for some editions, in N’Djamena in various neighborhoods and cultural places.
- Sites such as the Maison du quartier Chagoua, the French Institute of Chad, high schools and public spaces (Dembé market, Walia, etc.) host concerts, training sessions and awareness-raising activities.
Objectives and axes of the festival
- Support the emergence of talent by offering visibility, stages, meetings with programmers, producers and other music and CCI professionals.
- Structuring a real African music market: networking, creation residencies, workshops, training in cultural entrepreneurship and linking with the Central Africa sub-region.
Content and activities
- Artistic programming: concerts, dance battles, creation residencies in the visual arts, participation of artists from several Central African countries (Angola, Burundi, Congo, CAR, Rwanda, Sao Tome, etc.).
- Civic and social activities: awareness-raising (for example against breast cancer, the risks related to tobacco, chicha and adulterated alcohol), community actions in neighbourhoods, distribution of screening tickets, meetings with young people.
Target audience and impact
- Target audiences: artists (solo, groups, troupes), young cultural entrepreneurs, project leaders, culture professionals, as well as urban and peri-urban general public.
- Impact: creation of a space for meetings and opportunities, contribution to the “cultural awakening” of Chad, structuring of a regional network of young cultural entrepreneurs and project leaders from Central Africa (RJEP CAC)
This 10th edition promises to be a major event for creation, dialogue and citizen engagement, at the service of living together and cultural development.
